Par Excellence Cape Blend 2017

Par Excellence Cape Blend 2017

The 2016 vintage of the Par Excellence is dark and brooding in the glass. Initial aromas of rich, ripe black berries and cherry sets the stage for the bold, concentrated palate, with notes of char, espresso, licorice root and earthy spice throughout. Medium-plus in weight, with robust and gripping tannins, this firmly structured 2016 vintage shows great power and length.

Majority of the grapes are sourced from vineyards on north and south-east facing back slopes of the Tygerberg hills which are typical of the prime viticultural land that characterizes the maritime Durbanville wine ware influenced by the cold Atlantic Ocean just six miles away. Cooled in summer by moisture-laden, seasonal coastal mists and south-eastern breezes, these hills benefit from a typically Mediterranean climate with generous rainfall during frost-free winters and dry, warm summers. Deep and well-drained soils capture and retain water well into the summer, creating just the right balance between moisture and stress for the vine to naturally produce healthy and flavorful fruit.

The wines are handcrafted from start to finish. Grapes are hand picked and bunches and berries undergo a second sorting, also by hand, at the cellar. Pinotage grapes undergo maceration and gentle crushing after which they are fermented in open fermenters at varietally optimal temperatures. Maturation then takes place for approximately 13 months in 50% new, 225l French oak barriques.

This blend features classic aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, various spices, and earthy notes. Hitting the palate with richness and intensity, a lengthy aftertaste of subtle oak & an elegant minerality lingers on the finish. Balanced & generous the acidity comes from the freshness of the vintage.
